I have heard
about facial skin rejuvenation. What is it and how
is it done?
Facial skin rejuvenation, also called a photofacial,
involves a treatment plan that improves your appearance
and makes your skin look and feel more healthy and
attractive. Other areas, such as the neck, chest,
back and hands, can also be treated. Skin rejuvenation
can reduce wrinkles and loose skin, fade brown spots,
improve skin texture, refine pores, and remove red
blotches and facial veins. Anti-aging products may
be used such as tretinoin cream and glycolic acid
preparations, Botox® Cosmetic and filler substances
may be used, and procedures such as microdermabrasion, chemical peels,
intense pulsed light, Thermage® , Fraxel® and photodynamic therapy
may be performed. Sun protection is mandatory.
What is Fraxel® laser treatment?
FLT is a unique approach to treating aging skin, wrinkles,
pigmentation and acne scars. The face, neck, chest,
back, arms and hands can be treated. Several sessions
are usually required, and it can be used in combination
with other treatments, such as intense pulsed light
and Levulan® photodynamic therapy. The result is smooth,
fresh, radiant, healthy skin.
Will I outgrow
my acne? Most teenagers
will outgrow their acne, but some acne persists into
adulthood or even develops in an adult with no previous
history. Dr. Gidon can assess your acne and determine
what treatment plan would be most beneficial for you.
She can recommend non-prescription products and if
necessary, topical and oral medication. Various procedures
may speed improvement, such as microdermabrasion,
light chemical peels, Thermage® treatments or
Levulan® photodynamic therapy. Acne scarring can be treated with the Fraxel™ laser.
Is there a treatment
for rosacea? Rosacea consists
of a red face, spider veins and pimples. Dr. Gidon
can prescribe medication for the pimples and Levulan®
photodynamic therapy. The redness and spider veins
can be improved with intense pulsed light treatments
or laser treatments. Our soothing facials help calm
skin.
What treatments
will improve my dull complexion? Light chemical
peels, microdermabrasion,
trichloroacetic acid peels, intense pulsed light treatments
and Fraxel™ treatments help brighten and smooth
skin. We carry anti-aging products for home use to
help maintain the effects of the treatments.
What can I do
about fine lines and wrinkles on my face and neck?
Botox® Cosmetic will help smooth dynamic lines and
wrinkles on the forehead, brow, around crow's feet
and lips, and on the chin and neck. Filler substances,
such as Restylane®,
Perlane™,
Juvéderm™ and CosmoPlastTM,
can soften creases, especially around the nose, mouth
and chin, and can also enhance lips. Light and medium
chemical peels, microdermabrasion, intense pulsed
light treatments, Fraxel™ laser treatments and
anti-aging products also help diminish fine lines.
All of these procedures complement each other to give
the best possible results.
What is Sculptra?
Sculptra™ is a synthetic injectable product made of poly-L-lactic acid. It restores the volume of depressed areas of the face, such as skin creases, wrinkles and folds to give aging skin a more youthful appearance. Three treatments are usually necessary, about six weeks apart, and the skin gradually thickens over several months. The results last about two years.
What can I do
about the vertical lines around my lips?
Effective measures to prevent lip lines include the
use of sun protection and avoidance of smoking or
drinking with a straw. Botox® Cosmetic injections
and filler substances can greatly enhance your lips.
Chemical peels and microdermabrasion can help soften
lines and stimulate new collagen formation. Fraxel™
laser treatments smooth lines. Invasive treatments,
such as laser resurfacing, can be done but often there
is considerable recovery time and permanent white
discolouration around the mouth.
How can I improve
the appearance of my hands? Sun avoidance
is very important. Intense pulsed light or Fraxel™
laser treatments can fade brown age spots and improve
the texture of the skin. Microdermabrasion, light
chemical peels and anti-aging products also help to
maintain the effects of treatment.
How can I improve the appearance of my neck? Fraxel™ laser treatments smooth and tighten neck skin, and decrease brown pigmentation. Thermage™ tightens skin on the neck and jawline. Intense pulsed light fades red blotches on the neck. Light chemical peels and microdermabrasion soften skin and give a polished appearance. Botox® Cosmetic relaxes tight neck bands and softens the lines around the neck.
What is the difference
between Botox® Cosmetic and cosmetic fillers?
Botox® Cosmetic is a purified protein that is injected
into specific muscles that cause unwanted dynamic
wrinkles. Once movement of those muscles has stopped,
the wrinkles smooth out and fade. Filler substances
are usually gels that are injected under a crease
or line to plump it up, or for lip enhancement.
What are anti-aging
products? Ingredients such as tretinoin,
retinol, glycolic acid, vitamin C, and blue algae
are added to creams and lotions to reverse sun damage,
give a smoother, brighter complexion, fade brown spots,
minimize pores and soften fine lines. These products
also help maintain the effects of procedures such
as intense pulsed light, Levulan® photodynamic therapy,
Fraxel™, chemical peels and microdermabrasion.
Sunscreen should be applied every day to prevent future
damage and it is important to limit sun exposure.
What is the Thermage®? Heat
delivered to the skin causes tightening of the collagen
and the production of new collagen. This tightening
effect gives a mini face-lift, with elevation of the
brows, firming of the jaw line and improvement of
skin texture. In addition to the face, eyelids, arms,
thighs and the abdomen can also be treated for a tightening
effect.
What is photodynamic therapy with Levulan®?
Levulan® is a medication that is applied to
skin and activated by a blue light, laser or intense
pulsed light. It destroys sun damaged cells, shrinks
oil glands, and can improve skin texture, acne and
oiliness.
What treatments
are available to even out my skin tone? Intense
pulsed light treatments and laser therapy can help
fade spider veins and brown spots caused by aging
or the sun. Almost any area can be treated, including
your face, neck, chest, back, arms and hands. Light
chemical peels, microdermabrasion and fading creams
can also help fade brown spots.
What are my options
for hair removal? Laser or
intense pulsed light treatments result in permanent
hair reduction. Electrolysis destroys the hair root
and can result in permanent clearing of hair. Both
of these procedures require repeat treatments. We
also offer waxing for temporary removal of hair.
Will I need to
take time off work with any of these procedures? Most
of these procedures do not require any recovery time;
however, some patients may have a bruise that lasts
about one week after injections of Botox® Cosmetic
and filler substances. Bruising may also occur with
treatment of spider veins. Avoidance of anti-inflammatory
medication, vitamin E and alcohol about ten days before
the procedures can reduce the likelihood of bruising.
After Fraxel™ laser treatment of the face, there
is redness and puffiness for a few days, and mild
peeling for one to two weeks. Levulan® photodynamic
therapy causes redness for several days and peeling
for up to ten days.
Can Botox® Therapeutic
be used to treat excessive sweating?
One of the many uses of Botox®, beside the cosmetic
improvement of wrinkles, is to control excessive sweating
of the underarms, hands and feet, and the forehead.
. This effect may last up to nine months.
