Low-level Laser Light Biostimulation for Hair Growth

What is it?

Low-level laser light biostimulation is a safe, painless, non-surgical, and noninvasive treatment to thicken and grow thinning scalp hair in men and women. It is a non-chemical, risk-free treatment that improves hair growth, texture and quality. Studies have shown that at least 85% of men and women had hair regrowth and almost 100% had stabilization of hair loss. Hair looks and feels thicker, fuller and shinier. It is an alternative for patients who are not ready to have hair transplant surgery, or are concerned about the possible side effects of hair loss medications. Low-level laser light therapy also rejuvenates the hair follicles in the diffuse hair loss and thinning associated with menopause, and young men’s early hair loss. It can be used on its own, with Rogaine or Propecia, or after hair transplant surgery, to enhance the healing process and help the transplanted hair thrive.

How does male and female pattern hair loss occur?

The conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) by the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase weakens hair follicles in the scalp. DHT disrupts the binding of essential proteins and nutrients to cells in the follicle. This lack of nutrients gradually leads to a weakening of the hair in the follicle.

How does low-level light therapy work?

The visible red light from the laser panel painlessly penetrates 4mm into the scalp to the follicles. The light energy is absorbed by the cells and cell repair begins. It stimulates the production of energy at the cellular level to improve cell function. It causes an increase of calcium to the cells which increases protein and nutrient transport. The laser light stimulates microcirculation, decreases inflammation, and improves cellular metabolism and protein synthesis. These processes decrease the effect of dihydrotestosterone on the cells. The treatment will not work on completely bald areas, only in areas with live follicles.

Who is an ideal candidate for treatment?

- Anyone who has hereditary male or female pattern hair loss
- Men or women currently using prescription or non-prescription hair loss treatments
- Those that have had or plan to have surgical hair transplantation
- People with illnesses or medication causing hair loss
- Women who are experiencing post-partum hair loss

What is the treatment schedule?

Low-level laser light biostimulation involves a yearlong treatment program. Treatments are done 2-3 times a week for the first 6 weeks, twice a week for the next 6 weeks, once a week for the next 6 weeks, every other week for the next 8 weeks, and then once a month for a year. If necessary, maintenance treatments every 3 months can be done after the first year.

When will results be seen?

Results are seen in 3 to 4 months. It is important to adhere to the treatment schedule to achieve best results.
