Many teenagers deal with the problem of acne, including blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples. The condition is typically seen as one that plagues younger people going through puberty, but the dermatological issue can impact adults of any age. Acne is caused by a variety of factors, but an outbreak can be triggered by stress and exhaustion, and even your diet can exacerbate it. People of every race and gender develop acne.
Some estimates put the total number of Canadians who deal with acne at 2,031,742. This number was extrapolated based on country-specific data for the nearby United States, where 18,353,462 residents are actively managing the skin condition at any given time. Other estimates have put that number as high as 60 million.
Whether the highest or lowest number is the most accurate, the data show that acne is a common problem—probably more common than its sufferers feel or realize. Acne is a global issue, with an estimated 3.7 million people dealing with it in the United Kingdom, 6.5 million in Mexico, and 1.2 million in Australia. Teenagers and adults alike deal with acne from Brazil to China.
If you are embarrassed by an acne problem due to the visual marks it produces on your skin, and which sometimes leave behind noticeable scars, you should know that you are not alone.
You should also know that you have options for treatment. I have noted previously on this blog that my clinic in Toronto—Gidon Aesthetics and MediSpa—was the first in the area to offer Levulan photodynamic therapy for treating mild to moderate acne. Three to five sessions are generally enough to help skin to clear.
In cases where acne has already left scarring, I offer several different laser treatments and skin resurfacing procedures that can reduce the appearance of such marks and blemishes.
Acne is a common problem in Toronto, Canada at large, and the world as a whole, but that does not mean it is a problem you have to live with. If you are ready to fight acne at Gidon Aesthetics and MediSpa, call my office at (416) 483-4541.Written by Dr. Martie Gidon
