Fraxel treats sun-damaged skin in any season

Fraxel Laser Treatment’s ability to fight sun damage might not be the first procedure on your mind during the typically gray days of winter, but the cold and snowy months don’t really keep many people indoors. As the recent Winter Olympics highlighted, there are plenty of activities for fans of seasonal activities, from skiing to snowboarding. Even heading out and about for shopping or errands can expose you to the elements—all of which work to age your face.

While wind can batter you from your forehead to your chin, the sun—which shines in hot and cold weather alike—does the most damage. You might call the brown splotches that form on your face and arms “liver spots” and chalk them up to aging, but many of them are actually intense patches of pigment your skin makes in reaction to sunlight.

And they don’t have to be permanent.

Fraxel Laser Treatment, available at Gidon Aesthetics and MediSpa in Toronto, fades sunspots—and other blotchy, noticeable pigment problems—by targeting a very precise area to stimulate your body’s natural collagen production while getting rid of old pigmented cells on the surface. The precision technology preserves surrounding healthy tissue, which lends its own proverbial hand by further promoting healing.

As the treatment fades your sunspots, it’s also smoothing out wrinkles, improving your skin tone and any acne scars, and reducing pore size. Not just for your face, it works on your neck, back, chest, forearms, and hands, too.

The Fraxel laser treats only 20 percent of the targeted skin on each visit, which makes for fast healing and minimal downtime. After the initial procedure is completed—over the course of multiple sessions spread over several months—patients can return for “maintenance” one or two times a year if they choose.

The Fraxel procedure is also compatible with other treatments. If patients have extensive sun damage, they can opt for Levulan® photodynamic therapy that peels away damaged cells. Intense pulsed light can handle spider veins, dermal fillers can add volume to creases, and microdermabrasion can provide smoother, brighter skin.

It’s your face and body, so it’s up to you to decide which procedures you’d like—no matter what time of year it is.
