Get an early handle on acne

Acne is a problem that I can safely say virtually every person struggles with at some point in his or her life. The vast majority of young men and women develop acne troubles to some degree, from a few outbreaks of whiteheads and blackheads to the development of scar-generating lesions.

I offer a variety of acne-related treatments at Gidon Aesthetics and MediSpa in Toronto, including exfoliation techniques that reduce the appearance of scars. I always advise that teenagers and adults alike take steps to treat their acne long before it gets to the stage where permanent scarring is a worrying factor.

As with many medical conditions, early detection and treatment is key. The sooner acne is addressed, the fewer complications will develop.

A first line of defense comes in the form of skin creams or other topical solutions that work to eliminate dead skin cells that can plug up pores. These products can also reduce oil on the skin—too much of which contributes to the formation of acne and creates an environment in which cyst-causing bacteria thrive.

If acne continues to be a problem, I may next recommend stronger topical medicine that requires a prescription. Options at this tier include creams, as well as antibiotics that can be applied to the skin.

Stubborn or more serious cases may require prescription medications taken orally. The most potent of these is Accutane™, which is a form of Vitamin A and may be taken for several months, but is seen as an option when other attempts to clear up the acne have failed.

Controlling acne is important, but if scarring has occurred, there are options for improving the appearance of the scars. Acne may be a common problem, but suffering the ill effects of it doesn’t have to be.

Discuss acne—at any level of severity—during a consultation at Gidon Aesthetics & MediSpa. Call 416-483-4541 or visit to learn more.
