There are many criteria by which two people can judge each other when they initially meet, but scientists recently discovered that an inviting, full-lipped smile—whether the benefit of youth or product of lip augmentation—is one of the main factors that determine what sort of a first impression we make.
York University researchers in the field of psychology recently examined 1,000 photos of faces and viewers’ comments on those faces as part of an experiment. The team found that people typically judge new faces by three social criteria: dominance, approachability, and youthful-attractiveness.
While dominance refers to facial characteristics that lend a certain air of authority, the other two criteria are each marked by a wide, welcoming smile boasting round, full lips. The overall effect is pleasant and friendly.
The researchers created a scale made up of cartoon-like faces, with the lowest-rated first impressions on the left, and the highest-rated first impressions on the right. Under the youthful-attractiveness category, the face farthest to the left has—among other features—a pair of thin lips. The mouth looks tight, drawn, and unfriendly.
With aging, we lose volume in certain areas, including our cheeks and lips. Sunken hollows on the sides of our faces can make us look older than our actual age, and thin lips can give us a permanent disapproving expression that may convey the wrong impression to people we’re meeting for the first time.
Injectable fillers can restore that lost volume, thereby restoring confidence when it comes to making a positive first impression. The gel in these fillers, made out of hyaluronic acid, binds with water to keep aging, dry skin moist, elastic, and fresh.
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in many parts of the human body, including the skin. It retains moisture to keep skin healthy looking and acts as a supporting cushion for facial structures that would otherwise sink.
Fillers that use hyaluronic acid make lips appear plumper and fuller, which would put you more to the right on the York University facial scale, in both the approachability and youthful-attractiveness categories.
Lip augmentation is considered to be a minimally invasive procedure. It typically involves a few injections that can be completed in as little as half an hour, though the youthful effects of lip augmentation can last for months. I discuss in detail the size and shape of the lips that each individual desires, and sometimes just a small enhancement can make all the difference.
Fillers with hyaluronic acid can also be used to fill out those aforementioned facial hollows, as well as lines, wrinkles, and folds that also contribute to a more aged appearance. Patients at my Toronto medispa often make full use of fillers’ skin-smoothing properties and lip-augmentation abilities to give their face an overall fresh look.
There’s nothing wrong with wanting to be sure you’re conveying the expressions and attitude that properly reflect your character and how you feel. Lip augmentation can help with that important first impression.Written by Dr. Martie Gidon
