Have you been wondering, “How do you choose the right products for your skin type?” Our Toronto team knows that maintaining a good skincare routine can often seem like high maintenance, especially if you are new to skincare, but it’s easier than you might think. Your skin type describes the physical properties or characteristics of your skin. Identifying your skin type can help you know the best way to take care of it. The essential products for your skin are cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen, antioxidant serum and a repair product. It is important to choose the appropriate skincare products according to your skin type.
- Normal Skin
If you have normal skin, it may not take as much effort to maintain it in comparison to other skin types. Normal skin is not overly oily, dry, or sensitive – your overall skin feels comfortable and hydrated. There isn’t much drama here. You may simply need to focus on maintaining your skin with products for normal skin.
- Oily Skin
Oily skin has an overproduction of sebum. For oily skin, we may recommend products that control excess sebum production such as alpha hydroxy acids (glycolic acid) or beta hydroxy acids (salicylic acid), and benzoyl peroxide. Use oil-free or non-comedogenic products that won’t clog pores.
- Dry Skin
If you have this skin type, your skin may lose moisture too quickly and appear dry, flaky, dull, and itchy. Avoid abrasive or drying products and moisturize your skin regularly. Look for products containing ceramides, glycerin, hyaluronic acid or urea.
- Combination Skin
Combination skin is dry in some areas and oily or normal in others. You may need to use various products in different areas. For example, use a gentle cleanser all over but a drying product such as salicylic acid on oily areas only.
- Sensitive Skin
Sensitive skin is the most reactive skin type; it is more easily triggered by certain ingredients like fragrance and external irritants. When you apply the wrong products, your skin may experience redness, stinging, burning, or irritation. Those with sensitive skin should be particularly cautious about the ingredients they use. Consider skincare products that contain soothing and gentle ingredients like oatmeal, shea butter and hyaluronic acid.
