Our skin goes through changes during each decade of life. Starting in our 20s, we begin to lose collagen and elastin, the supporting structures of the skin, and new production slows down. Fine lines, wrinkles and volume loss start to develop and blood vessels become more fragile.

Intrinsic chronological aging isn’t the only cause of facial wrinkles. Extrinsic damage, also resulting in breakdown of collagen and elastin, is caused by the sun, environmental factors and smoking. The muscle movements involved in our facial expressions, such as squinting, smiling, frowning, and raising our eyebrows, can contribute to the development of lines and wrinkles. These commonly occur on the upper third of the face, on the forehead and around the eyes. Other areas of concern are around the mouth, chin and neck. Neuromodulators for cosmetic treatments from our Toronto-based practice can soften those lines and wrinkles to make you look happier, younger and more refreshed.

Although botulinum toxin type A injections are minimally invasive, bruising is a potential side effect, even with a skilled injector and very fine needles. To prevent bruising, we recommend avoidance of certain blood thinning products for one week prior to the injections if medically possible, and for 24 hours after the injections. These products include alcohol, green tea, anti-inflammatory medications such as acetaminophen and ASA, omega 3s, vitamin E, garlic and some herbal medications. Starting arnica pills a few days before the treatment may also minimize bruising.

What can be done if bruising does occur? These bruises can last a few days and camouflage makeup can be worn. Intense pulsed light or vascular laser treatments can help bruises fade more quickly and topically applied arnica may also help. Avoid strenuous exercise and hot showers for 24 hours to prevent the bruise from enlarging. It’s best to plan ahead so check your social calendar before scheduling your appointment.
