Who would benefit from a light chemical peel? This question is frequently asked by patients in our Toronto-based Gidon Aesthetics & MediSpa practice. Since patients are often unsure which skin rejuvenation treatment would be most suitable for them, we assess their skin and create an individualized treatment plan which often includes chemical peels.

We use glycolic acid for our light chemical peels. This fruity acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), that is applied to the treatment area for a few minutes. The contact time depends on the patient’s skin type. The surface dead skin cells are gently lifted and removed. Smoother, fresher and brighter skin is revealed. Since it is a mild, superficial peel, there is minimal recovery time and peels are often combined with other treatments such as facials, IPL and some laser treatments. Using a glycolic acid home care regimen will help maintain the effects of the peel.

  • Which skin conditions benefit from light peels?

Peels can address several concerns including sun damage, a dull complexion, rough texture, fine lines, age spots, enlarged pores, mild acne scars, and uneven skin tone. They can even improve acne as part of an acne treatment regimen.

  • What improvements are seen?

The skin is more radiant with improved texture and smoothness. Dark spots can lighten and fine lines are softened. Acne may be better controlled.

  • Does skin type matter?

Light chemical peels can safely be performed on all skin types. It is important to avoid sun exposure after the peel to prevent hyperpigmentation or dark spots.

  • What areas can be treated?

Any area can be treated. Favourite areas are the face, neck, chest, back and hands.

  • Who should avoid light peels?

Peels should be avoided if eczema is present in the treatment area or if there has been a recent sunburn. If there is a history of cold sores (herpes simplex), oral antiviral medication should be started before the peel and a peel is not performed if a cold sore is present.
