With normal aging, the shape of the face begins to change. Typical characteristics of a youthful face are high cheekbones, full cheeks, and a defined jawline. As we age, the skin, muscle, fat and bone that make up the structure of the face undergo changes. Facial fat pads decrease and descend, the skin becomes thinner and sags, muscles lose some density and the bones become thinner and provide less facial structure. Although they are often neglected when it comes to facial rejuvenation, the jaw and chin play an important role in framing the face. A sculpted jawline creates a stronger, more confident appearance. A frequently asked question by patients is, “Can fillers improve the jawline?”. Our Toronto-based Gidon Aesthetics & MediSpa team recommends facial fillers, neuromodulators, deoxycholic acid and radio frequency skin tightening to improve the appearance of the lower face.

  • Facial Fillers

Hyaluronic acid fillers are commonly used to restore lost facial volume and plump wrinkles and lips. In addition, they can also improve the contours of the lower face. Fillers can be used to replace bony loss as well as lift sagging skin, project the chin and define the jawline.

  • Neuromodulators

Neuromodulators contain a purified protein that prevents muscles from recognizing nerve signals to contract. Grinding or clenching can enlarge the masseter muscles and result in a heavier jaw or more square-jawed appearance. Muscles causing a mouth frown and dimpled chin can also turn an oval-shaped face to a square. The platysma neck muscles can pull down the jawline and contribute to sagging. Neurotoxins can help relax these muscles and help sculpt a slimmer, more oval jawline.

  • Deoxycholic Acid Injections

Sometimes it can be difficult to lose double chin fat with diet and exercise alone. Reducing fat from the neck area also helps give a more chiselled jawline. Deoxycholic acid injections can permanently dissolve some of the stubborn fat from under the chin.

  • Radio Frequency Skin Tightening

Radio frequency can tighten skin by delivering heat deeply into the skin. It tightens existing collagen and stimulates the production of new collagen. The effect is tightening and lifting of saggy skin and a more defined jawline.
