The ABCDEs of Skin Cancer: 5 Warning Signs to Look For

The summer months are associated with sunny days and outdoor fun but it’s also a time to acknowledge one of the world’s most dangerous diseases affecting the skin. Caring for your skin goes beyond simply cleansing and nourishing the body’s protective barrier, it also means guarding it against harmful outside forces like ultraviolet (UV) radiation. This summer, our team at Gidon Aesthetics, who provide information on dermatology for Toronto area patients, will be highlighting important things to know about the common disease, including effective methods of prevention and detection.

THE ABCDES OF SKIN CANCER: 5 WARNING SIGNS TO LOOK FOR

Cancers can appear very differently on various people and there’s no fixed description. The A-B-C-D-E criteria provides useful details to make it easier to examine yourself for melanoma, the most dangerous type of skin cancer. It can be explained as follows:

The ABCDEs of Detecting Melanoma

  • A is for Asymmetry: Normal moles maintain a uniform, symmetrical shape while cancerous lesions usually have two sides that don’t match.
  • B is for Border: The border of a cancerous mark is typically irregular, blurry and undefined.
  • C is for Colour: Rather than being a single, solid shade, skin cancer is characterized by unusual splotches of mottled black, brown, white, red, or blue.
  • D is for Diameter: Larger lesions that are 6mm or more in size may raise some red flags.
  • E is for Evolving: New marks, or ones that seem to be continually changing in shape, a cut that doesn’t heal properly, or unexpected symptoms such as bleeding should be checked out.

Skin cancer is associated with abnormal mutations of cells and is usually linked to the sun’s UV light. In addition to putting yourself at a greater risk of developing skin cancer, excess, unprotected sun exposure throughout life accelerates premature aging by damaging the structure of the skin. Some common symptoms include sunspots, wrinkles, and skin laxity, which may require laser skin enhancement.

The Canadian Skin Cancer Foundation warns against artificial indoor tanning and recommends seeking shade during the most intense hours of sunlight, frequently applying broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of over 30 before you go out,and wearing protective clothing to cover the skin.

How Does Radiofrequency Skin Tightening Work?

Our skin naturally loses some elasticity due to aging and sun damage. Radiofrequency skin tightening, which our Toronto area Gidon Aesthetics & MediSpa practice offers, is thought to be one of the best ways of improving saggy and wrinkled skin. But how exactly does this aesthetic treatment work? Here’s a basic explanation of the science behind radiofrequency for cosmetic applications.

Radiofrequency (RF) energy is a form of electromagnetic radiation. It consists of waves of combined electric and magnetic energy radiation. Microwaves, radio waves, broadcast antennas, and radars emit this kind of energy and it’s often used in telecommunications. Forms of radiofrequency have been used in the medical field for therapeutic purposes since the 1930s and are still being used today for electrosurgery and radiofrequency ablation.

It has also become a useful tool for the beauty world because it can heat the skin from the inside out and reach its deepest layers with low frequency to refine contours, such as those of the cheeks, neck, and jawline for a more sculpted appearance. This will be a highly beneficial, non-surgical alternative for a patient whose primary concerns are skin laxity and sagging. The energy given off from the machine produces heat that helps to lift and tighten skin. Radio frequency skin tightening can be performed any time of year since it is not affected by sun exposure.

It stimulates production of the patient’s own collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid and speeds up skin cell turnover without harming the skin’s outer layer. This method is non-invasive and completely safe. It’s a quick, lunchtime procedure that won’t leave behind scars or discoloration, and requires no downtime.

As a result, the skin instantly becomes firmer and tighter. Wrinkles on the face such as smile lines are softened and continue to improve gradually during the following months. Another advantage of radiofrequency is its ability to tighten loose stretch marks and minimize cellulite on other areas of the body. This is effective for tightening of the abs, thighs, and upper arms. Usually only one treatment is necessary and can be repeated in six to 24 months.

5 Benefits of Lip Fillers

Fillers are made of soft, gel-like substances and are commonly used for reducing wrinkles or restoring volume of the face. They are a highly popular, non-surgical method of enhancing the lips, especially amongst younger people. Thinking of having this aesthetic treatment? Here are five reasons why our Gidon Aesthetics & MediSpa team in Toronto recommends lip fillers.

1. Enlarge Naturally Small Lips

If you’ve always had small lips, genetics are the most likely cause. Fillers increase their volume for a more supple, luscious appearance. Despite the common misconception, lip fillers aren’t likely to cause a disproportionate, bee stung-like appearance that many patients are afraid of. In most cases, skilled injectors are able to add a subtle enhancement of the lips that is barely noticeable.

2. Make Asymmetrical Lips More Even

Some people are born with lips that are naturally uneven with a larger top or bottom lip, or alternatively, this asymmetry may occur as a result of weakened facial muscles or disease. Hyaluronic acid fillers do more than simply augment lips; they can also make lips look more balanced by altering their shape and structure.

3. Reduce Effects of Aging

Lip fillers are also useful for tackling fine lipstick lines and wrinkles on or around the lips. It’s common for the lips to become flattened, thin, and deflated as hyaluronic acid, collagen, and elastin are depleted from skin due to natural aging. Sun exposure can also contribute to the formation of wrinkles around the mouth.

4. Make Lips Glossier

It’s common for people to have dry or dull lips especially if they live in colder climates. Another advantage of using lip fillers is that they can make dry, chapped or cracked lips appear glossy smoother and shinier. The fillers used by Dr. Gidon contain a moisture-preserving ingredient known as hyaluronic acid.

5. Convenience

Lip injections are completed in quick, in-office treatments. They are low-maintenance, and it is easy for the injector to control how much filler is placed. It’s also possible to reverse the effects of the filler with an enzyme if you’re unhappy with the results.
